What Is Hand Stripping?
Hand stripping is a traditional grooming technique used to maintain certain wire coats by manually removing mature outer coat that is ready to shed. Rather than cutting the coat shorter with clippers, the finished coat is maintained through careful removal and rotation of mature hair to support its characteristic texture, color and appearance.
Hand stripping at K9 Atelier is performed by Penny, a multiple award-winning show groomer experienced in breed-specific coat care.
Hand Stripping vs. Clipping
Hand stripping and clipping create different results on a wire coat. Clipping or shaving cuts the existing coat shorter, while hand stripping removes mature outer coat by hand to help preserve the coat’s natural texture, color and breed character. For suitable coats, traditional hand stripping can help maintain the characteristic texture, color and finish associated with the breed.
Which Coats Are Suitable for Hand Stripping?
Hand stripping is commonly associated with wire-coated Terriers, Schnauzers and other breeds with a suitable harsh outer coat. Coat condition, previous grooming history, age, skin condition and the desired finish all influence whether hand stripping is appropriate for an individual dog.
Breeds commonly associated with traditional hand stripping include Norwich Terriers and other wire-coated terriers with suitable coat texture.
How Often Does a Hand-Stripped Coat Need Maintenance?
Maintenance frequency depends on the coat cycle, coverage, previous grooming and the desired finish. Some dogs benefit from regular coat rotation to maintain a consistent wire texture, while others are scheduled when sufficient mature coat is ready to be removed.
